Rob Walker from the New York Times has written a new and interesting piece on the artist Brian Donnelly, more commonly known as KAWS. The conventional way that most artists are brought into the spotlight is through showings at art galleries. However until recently, KAWS has never worked or dealt with dealers or art galleries but yet his artwork has achieved recognition worldwide with celebrities like Pharrell Williams buying up his artwork.

John Jay, executive creative director at the ad agency Wieden & Kennedy, remembers meeting Donnelly in Japan and thinking that he had somehow skipped a career step. “But people don’t always understand,” Jay adds, “you don’t have to have a gallery to sell to international stars anymore.”
