In order to celebrate and promote the upcoming 2008 Olympic in Beijing, Nike stepped up to the plate big time, literally, by projecting images of some of China’s greatest athletes onto the sides of the new CCTV government building in Beijing. Designed by Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas, the building represents China’s rapid progress and its bright future. Nike chose the perfect medium for this campaign as it showcases China’s athleticism with a very symbolic backdrop.

Nike Vandal, born in 1984 as the successor to the Nike Air Force 1, is coming out with a new design this year named Nike Vandal High Supreme EX. The shoe comes in all black with spike-like texture covering the entire shoe. It has a tremendous amount of great details including a gold trim around the Nike Swoosh on the side, an ankle strap with gold rings and an embroidered Nike logo, and a tan-colored bottom sole again with gold accents. With the combination of black and gold and the use of different textures, this pair of shoes definitely rules supreme in the world of sneakers. Available on June 6th at Atmos Tokyo.
Japanese brand Devilock and their 11 years of service have branded fans with a taste of their rock & roll and rebellion inspired aesthetic through their own interpretive eyes. With a strong lifestyle including radio and TV backing their cause, the brand has taken to their 2008 summer collection with a series of designs reflective of their path. Many t-shirts revolve around the collection’s theme of “Destroy Everything & Rebuild” with the added inclusion of flip flops in a variety of colors. Available now at Juice in Hong Kong.
F.C.R.B. has released a new capsule of products under the title of Black Series. The name is pretty much indicative of what you’d expect with a number of designs and features that revolve around black t-shirts and hats. The designs are logo-driven and represent F.C.R.B. as a casual offering relative to more sophisticated releases such as SOPHNET. and uniform experiment.
Celebrating a year of service, Purist Boutique has lined up a series of collaborations including one with Futura Laboratories. The encompassing theme behind not only this collaboration but each respective upcoming product was something that represented the brand’s roots or direction. The upcoming range of products will all come from brands which have supported Purist from its early beginnings with hopes of releasing one new product per week. To celebrate hip-hop artist Wale’s rising success, music magazine Urb has stepped in to create a New Era 59FIFTY cap with the fledging artist. The cap is chock full of details from the intricate shoe lace logo on the front to numerous embroideries seen on the underbill and back. Nas could have easily looked at his enduring legacy in hip hop, sat back, relaxed and gave himself a congratulatory pat on the back. He could have easily gone the way of several legendary MCs whose flow got lethargic and stale and decided instead of deciding to push forward took a long deep look into the past. No one would have blamed him either. He would easily go down as one of the most poetic influential important street poets to ever lay his voice on wax not just in Hip Hop but in music in general. But as Nas stated on the intro to his Stillmatic album “They thought I’ll make another Illmatic/but it’s always forward I’m moving stupid never backwards here’s another classic.” This is the feeling that has summed up the later part of Nas’ career.
Just about every album he has dropped in the new millennium has either been thoughtfully penned beautifully tragic pieces like the slightly somber “God’s Son” penned in the wake of his mother’s death, or an affirmation of his hardcore gritty NY rap roots with the double album “Streets Disciple”, or the intentionally controversial titled semi concept album “Hip Hop is Dead”. Just the titles alone shows an artist hell bent on leaving a huge dent in hip hop before he bows out. His new album was to be titled the most offensive racial epithet ever uttered (yes that one). Although Nas changed the album title to simply “Nas” he assured the fans that the content will be just as politically charged and incendiary as the former album title conveys. One look at the cover of the new album the viewer gets an incredibly powerful statement that an entire music career or volumes of books for that matter couldn’t convey. If the new album dropping July 1st is half as powerful as the album cover, we’re in for another classic.
