With China acting as host country for the 2008 Summer Olympics, Nike has afforded China with a special colorway of their recent flagship release the Hyperdunk. Utilizing new and innovative Flywire technology, the Hyperdunk has set the standard for lightweight basketball footwear. Flywire itself is based on wire structures often seen on bridges. Taking this concept, Nike has utilized this theme in creating footwear that maintains support only where it’s needed, effectively minimizing excess support and weight. The colorway features iconic Chinese colors in red and yellow.

Considered by many as Hong Kong’s poster boy of designer toy world, Michael Lau was sourced by Nike to create a special sneaker for the Chinese BMX Federation. The sneaker maintains a strong aesthetic allegiance to China’s iconic colors with yellow and red colors. The package also features a toy and special commemorative box to complete the set.
Yesterday saw the unveiling of a series of new products under the newly relaunched Nike Sportswear division. Among the products were a one piece Dunk High featuring a series of pixels forming the outline of the upper and Swoosh. Antenna Magazine has provided a more comprehensive look into the collection. We’ve seen a strong theme involving by-products of the number ‘8’ including liberal use of the octagon. In relation with the Beijing Olympics and the Chinese population, number 8 is a symbol of large significance indicating prosperity. No word yet on a release date.

With a retro running shoe renaissance on our hands, we’ve seen our fair share of re-developed and re-inspired designs of cult classics. Case in point, the RC576D features a slimmer racing profile which ties in nicely with a more contemporary direction of lifestyle footwear in general. The addition of brogue punching on the toebox and upper create a transformation from former performance sneaker to full blown lifestyle offering. A colorful assortment of Head Porter bags are on the horizon coming under the influence of Staple Design and resulting in the Prism collection. Although the preview shots reveal little, an interesting graphic features the Head Porter logo and the Staple Design chair icon together with an addition sign. For numerous years, New Balance’s 580 profile was an elusive model for people outside of Japan often commanding large sums for their status often boosted by collaborations with Stussy and hectic. However, we’ve seen the situation improve drastically for 580 fans in recent times as the availability and distribution has opened up on a global scale. The chunky supportive runner has been seen popping up in various forms with a hope these two upcoming colors will also see worldwide light.

In a union of West Coast and East Coast, Los Angeles’ Diamond Supply Co. and New York’s Reason have collaborated on a t-shirt for the upcoming Creme de la Creme party on May 15th. The t-shirt print features a vintage styled movie poster including two monsters battling it out for supremacy. The event flyer can be seen after the jump.

To celebrate this year’s 10th anniversary, Silas has put forth a collection of t-shirts representing the brand’s achievement. Styles include some graphics done by previous Silas affiliates including accomplished artist James Jarvis of Amos Toys. A total of four styles include Barbed Wire, Satan, Rainbow Skull and Anarchy. Bringing together New York and Los Angeles influences, the brand is a reflection of cross coast thoughts, lifestyles and themes. The 2008 spring/summer collection is available now at retailers such as Karmaloop, Union LA, Atmos NY, aNYthing and Lafayette JP.
Death Cab for Cutie holds the rare title of a band that comes from the indie scene with a platinum album and a Grammy nomination. However, upon closer analyzation of the band and their music it is not that farfetched as it sounds. The band has connected with fans by combining pop melody, Ben Gibbard’s boy next door persona, heartfelt lyrics and indie sensibilities. Three years after the bands critical acclaimed “Plans”, the group is a bit older, a little more seasoned and seemingly a little more cynical. The new album “Narrow Stairs” takes a darker, moodier turn then their past efforts but still relies heavily on the literary whisper heavy style of Gibbard that initially gave the band its charm.
The first single “I Will Posses Your Heart” clocks in at over eight minutes and contains a lengthy instrumental introduction. The song selection for a video and radio song seems more like a band attempting to redefine their sound rather than one easing into the comfort zone of rock veterans. However, the decision to make the song the first single is a reminder that the group though signed to a major record label still holds to its independent roots. Musically the song is a soundtrack to a longing heart filled with lyrics of longing and despair over the bands standard down tempo guitar blare and lightly played keyboard sound.
Japanese designer Hideki Kimura has released his 2008 Spring/Summer collection, showcased by clothing of tasteful, if slightly conservative, colors and fabrics with a distinctly warm-weather feel. An assortment of knee-length shorts in subdued patterns of plaid and fine stripes are clearly in the vein of “dressy”. Also included are three shades of a smart, light-weight 3/4 length capri slack, with a generous leg that gives the illusion of pleats, and a tastefully oversized tuck. He rounds out the line with a line of simple photo-printed t-shirts with images paying tribute to the controversial motion picture “Kids”. Available in June at Bridge store in Harajuku Tokyo.
