hipster is a useless definition: if you acknowledge the existence of hipsters, you are in fact a hipster.
the only way to reject hipster-ism is to reject the concept of identity.
the concept is well-demonstrated by the following experiment:
walk into a trendy area and yell "HIPSTERS!" in an accusatory manner. see how many people turn to look at you in a defensive way.
they're trying to defend themselves against the hipster accusation despite the fact that it would have no meaning if they were not, in fact, hipsters.
more explanation: the term hipster has come to mean post-anything. so the hipster of today is post-80s-ish, post-punk-ish, something.
problem is, if you declare yourself not a hipster, you're declaring yourself as post-hipster, which is still being a hipster. so it's a meaningless word that hinges on the concept of a self-identity that allows contradictions such as these.
