Union LA x The Broad Pay Homage to Patrick Martinez
Presenting two graphics that showcase Martinez’s work.
Union LA has partnered up with Los Angeles art museum The Broad to pay homage to collection artist Patrick Martinez. An LA local himself, Martinez joining hands with the LA-based outfitter marks a monumental merge of Southern California art and streetwear.
The duo whipped up a capsule consisting of two graphics; each is inspired directly by one of Martinez’s works that are currently on display at the museum’s Desire, Knowledge, and Hope (with Smog) exhibition.
For the first graphic, Martinez’s “They Tried To Bury Us, They Didn’t Know We Were Seeds” neon sign is featured on the back of the silhouette. The front sees stacked Union LA and The Broad branding, with Martinez’s signature underneath. The other showcases a centered graphic of another of Martinez’s on-display pieces with co-branding on the back of the neck.
“I couldn’t wait for The Broad to open, so you can imagine my excitement when we got the call from The Shop to work on this project,” recalled Chris Gibbs. “I enjoy being a patron of such a dynamic cultural institution and was grateful for the opportunity to work on this capsule celebrating one of my favorite artists and fellow Angeleno, Patrick Martinez.”
Martinez echoed the excitement in an Instagram caption, writing: “I hope I can inspire a young teen that walks into The Broad to pick up something they can wear but also moves them at the same time. Another thing that comes up for me often is access and how people can walk away with a print version of the art. So with that, It’s a real pleasure to connect the dots with The Broad and Union to offer this small capsule collection to people in Los Angeles and beyond.
