Vince Staples has thrown his support and donations behind a YMCA program called the Youth Institute in his hometown of Long Beach, California. Held at a local middle school for eighth and ninth grade students, the effort aims to assist 20 kids in filmmaking, music production, graphic design, 3D printing and product design. Staples turned up for the official launch at Ramona Park, a spot he refers to regularly on his album Summertime ’06. “I want to be able to be one of the people that reinforces the fact that we matter just as much as the next person,” Staples said to the Long Beach Press-Telegram. “That’s actually the biggest thing I can do for this community.” Staples also tweeted about his involvement, demonstrating his signature sense of humor:
Work hard to do something for kids so they have something other to do other kill each other this summer and y’all got Spike Lee jokes.. Lol
