For many, coming home is a form of therapy – a simple, resolute withdrawal from the perpetual blitz of the outside world. It’s that sense of therapy that inspired House 1.0, an ambitious new project by architecture firm odD+. An ingeniously modern structure located in the heart of Quito, Ecuador, House 1.0 was a unique challenge for odD+ which required a unique approach. The client challenged the architecture firm to create a space that was both open and closed, with secluded sections and more open social areas living harmoniously under one roof.
To met these paradoxical requirements, odD+ delved into neuroscience research for insights. After much planning, they designed a home that blends together an open floor plan with a labyrinth of private spaces baked in. This was accomplished using a slew of innovative techniques, like a linear nave built of exposed concrete that serves as an elegant buffer between the social and private areas, and an asymmetrical slanted roof that rises higher in social areas and dips down in private sections. The roof in particular was designed to negate the extremes between the closed and open areas, with its continuous flow allowing the opposing elements to peacefully live – quite literally – under one roof. Finally, the create a sense of rhythm and flow within the home, odD+ used patterns of materials like exposed concrete, recycled wood from the clients’ previous home, and stone extracted from Ecuador for the floors, ceilings, and walling. The result is a stunning domicile deep in the Ecuadorian wilderness. It’s altogether a therapeutic fortress of solitude, a modern architectural marvel, and above all else, home.
