COMME des GARCONS 2014 Spring Collection

“Hatching: something strong is born through the process of hatching… losing the shell,” says Rei Kawakubo on the caliginous interpretations she presented during Paris Fashion Week recently for COMME des GARCONS 2014 spring collection. While a few outfits offer metaphors of new life and growth, the sense of decay and depression sits amid the bold range. Here, models were clad in dark layers of fabrics with eyes blackened and hair plastered to their foreheads — a look conjuring tramp-like themes. With traditional renditions like the blazer and trench coat paired with dress shorts and ruched, patch-worked trousers, the show saw a metamorphosis with lighter designs (plaid and chromatic hues) take the runway in various loose-fitted silhouettes, showing Kawakubo’s process of rebirth – a reoccurring theme transcended by the Japanese designer each season.
