MUNSOO KWON‘s third collection was inspired by the theme of “kidult” — not to be confused with KIDULT — and the “phenomenon of adults participating in youth culture and activities traditionally intended for children.” The concept, in actuality, is not nearly as creepy as it sounds. Kidults, according to Kwon, are like many of us, admiring popular culture from the ’80s and ’90s — movies and novels, sports superstars, figurines and other childhood toys. For Fall/Winter 2013, these nostalgic elements were translated to tailored looks made youthful with vibrant colors and patterns intended to evoke childhood memories. Taken from classic schoolboy attire, duffle coats were transformed with asymmetrical closures and multicolored toggles, while reworked varsity jackets also recalled the classroom, but in new and exciting ways. Elsewhere, polka dots of various sizes appeared on cardigans, denim shirts and jeans, making up a collection that should appeal to the “kidult” in all of us.
