After associating with Gibson guitars and Peta2, French label APRIL77 nows pays tribute to independent record label, Domino Records. The result is a limited edition box set containing both a deluxe vinyl record and APRIL77’s signature Manchester pique polo shirt. The 12” vinyl record consists of tracks from bands such as Clinic, The Kills, Von Sudenfed, Sons & Daughters, These New Puritans, Lightspeed Champion, Franz Ferdinand, and Stephen Malkmus. The shirt features a pick holder and includes a special Domino x APRIL77 guitar pick. The APRIL77 Tribute To Domino Records package is limited to 440 copies. Available now at the April77 boutique in Paris, at a price of 70 Euros (approximately $110 USD).
Japanese hip-hop group Teriyaki Boyz are well on their way to international recognition. Their relationships with A Bathing Ape founder and resident DJ, Nigo has landed them cross-Pacific collaborations with the likes of Pharrell Williams and Busta Rhymes on their latest album “Zock On”. To commemorate the CD’s release, a package was put together including both the CD and A Bathing Ape t-shirt featuring the CD album’s artwork.

In Iron Maiden’s latest global tour dubbed “Somewhere Back in Time”, the group have been traveling in style with a special modified Boeing 757 plane. A special contest was held to choose an appropriate name for the plane who coincidentally is being piloted by Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, a licensed pilot with Astraeus Airlines. Ed Force One was chosen from over 2,000 entries, representing Iron Maiden’s iconic mascot Eddie.

Japanese hip-hop group Teriyaki Boyz just debuted their newest video for their latest single, “Zock On” featuring Pharrell Williams and Busta Rhymes. The video’s premise basically takes random “fun” items featured in the beginning of the video, and are again shown throughout the whole track. As always Bape products are adorned on all Teriyaki Boyz members. There’s also a cameo by Nigo, and Pharrell shows us his versatility by doing the track’s hook in Japanese. Produced by the Neptunes (Star Trak), the “Zock On” single will release on 3/19/08. The video can be seen over at Youtube.

The exclusive package designed by Phillipe Cuendet includes a remix album and t-shirt, all created in relevant packaging. In association with one of Japan’s premier dancehall acts Mighty Crown (and creators of the subsequent Nike Dunk), Nine Rulaz Line fuses some of that same dancehall mentality as well as taking bits of American culture, Japanese culture and club culture to complete their ethos. For their 5th anniversary, Nine Rulaz and Mighty Crown created a special CD accompanied by Kuumba incense and a Garni incense holder.
World Renowned Hip Hop/R&B artist Pharrell Williams and Japan’s music producer Nigo from APE SOUNDS are hosting Star Bape Search which is an audition to find the next female R & B artist. The audition will consist of several stages and will be broadcast on the NIGOLDENEYE show through MTV. The winner of the auction will get One Million Yen and also their own debut CD with APE SOUNDS. American artist DJ Spinbad teamed up with Japanese personal DJ HIROnyc and clothing label Mackdaddy to celebrate Mackdaddy’s 10th anniversary. The music inspired collaboration includes a mix CD as well as two t-shirt designs. Available at select Mackdaddy dealers.
Edison Chen from CLOT has a successful year in 2007, having released his first mandarin album in 3 years and also the hip-hop duo Fama from his music production company CMD has taken several major music awards in the past month. This year, Edison will release his long-awaited Cantonese album and just recently he has given a sneak peek into his new song’s music video. In the picture you will no doubt recognise the infamous double crosses by NYC street artist Kaws. From the look of things, this should be another highly anticipated album.
NY Times writer Kelefa Sanneh recently documented the current downfall of hip-hop as evidenced by sluggish album sales as well as the current role of independent music labels. Despite the unconvincing numbers and the lack of multi-million album sales which proliferated itself in the earlier half of this decade, it seems as though the need to grind it out is the difference from fading out and the end of the tunnel.
