nonnative is a contemporary menswear label based in Tokyo, Japan founded in 1999 by Satoshi Saffen. At the height of the Ura-Harajuku movement, nonnative began with a single T-shirt design. The brand has collaborated with the likes of TAKAHIROMIYASHITATheSoloist, New Balance, and SEIKO in the past.
Takayuki Fujii, formerly of SILAS, joined the brand in 2001 as its creative director, bringing overseas influences informed by his extensive travelling, particularly from Europe and the United States. nonnative’s style is marked by its reinterpretation of traditional workwear and outerwear with subtle military hints, combined with premium materials and textiles. Almost all of the brand’s products are sourced and made within Japan, not only for the higher production standards domestically, but also so that nonnative’s designers can visit the factories in person to observe the manufacturing process. nonnative is part of That Nonnative Production (TNP), a holding company which also encompasses secondary label hobo and home goods label Roots to Branches, and under which its three select shops are operated.
