Description

Marc Newson is a widely recognized Australian industrial designer. Born in Sydney, Australia, Newson graduated from the Sydney College of the Arts, having studied jewelry and sculpture. In 1986, the Australian Crafts Council awarded Newson a grant, who subsequently held an exhibition featuring his breakthrough design, the Lockheed Lounge, which was featured in a Madonna music video. After a stint in Tokyo where he designed the iconic Embryo Chair, Newson moved to Paris in 1991 where he co-founded the Ikepod watch company in 1994 with Oliver Ike. Moving to London in 1997, Newson set up Marc Newson Ltd. with business partner Benjamin de Haan, under which he has produced most of his major works to date, ranging in everything from aircraft design and product design, to furniture design, jewelry, and clothing. Newson is close friends with Apple’s Jony Ive, a relationship which has led to many collaborative projects, as well as his joining the Apple design team in 2014. Newson has also designed for G-Star RAW, Pentax, Leica, Hermes, and Nike, and his works are featured in museums worldwide, like Paris’ Centre Georges Pompidou, New York’s MoMA, and London’s Victoria & Albert Museum. His design style has been described as biomorphic, utilizing smooth flowing lines, translucency and a lack of sharp edges.
