Bianca Saunders continued to redefine menswear in 2019 by combining cultural references of her British-West Indian heritage with tailoring and serving a roster of familiar yet refreshing garments. The London-based designer, who was a NEWGEN: One To Watch winner in 2018, is known for elevated menswear and tailoring that introduces a discussion surrounding identities.
It’s this approach that saw her AW18 collection at Pitti Uomo undress black male identities and the stereotypes surrounding hypermasculinity. SS19 at London Fashion Week Men’s examined body language and mannerisms researched by Saunders in self-made films, and FW19 went on to explore black male identity once more, looking at self-expression in the subjects’ bedrooms.
Saunder’s ability to consider the male body inside and out — while presenting clothes which provide a feminized look of traditional masculine fashion tropes — is why she continues to impress each season.
