Tom Sachs is a trailblazer in the conceptual art realm with a strong foothold in popular consumer culture. The New York City-based artist continues to craft thought-provoking pieces — his Frieze 2018 presentation this past September is likely to be the most politically-charged work he’s ever created. Dubbed Swiss Passport office, attendees of the London installation were given the chance to purchase their very own, hand-typed and serial-numbered Tom Sachs Studio passport invoking the original Swiss identity document. Collectively, the work, amidst the on-going global refugee crisis, aimed to “break down the borders and eliminate the concept of nationality,” said Sachs. Trailing the installation, the artist recently unveiled his 23-minute film called Paradox Bullets that offered an exclusive look at his long-rumored Nike collaboration, the Mars Yard Overshoe. The clip relayed seemingly contradictory rules to live by, an ostensible extension of the artist’s initial guide entitled 10 Bullets where he satirizes workplace tutorials.
