Manhattan-based contemporary artist, sculptor and film maker Tom Sachs has made his name through a diverse array of projects that this year alone include a NASA-inspired tea ceremony at the Noguchi museum, exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum and Jeffrey Deitch gallery in New York, and his Space Program: Europa project that included live astronaut demonstrations. Yet 2016 was also hugely significant for Sachs thanks to his – initially mysterious – role in Frank Ocean’s epic return to the public eye that held the world captive in August this year. Endless, the visual album that heralded Ocean’s long-awaited comeback features one of Sachs’ signature boombox pieces while the artist also assisted with the Stairway to Heaven artwork within the 45-minute video. The two have known each other for several years and with Sachs also credited within the Boys Don’t Cry zine that accompanied the record, this burgeoning relationship is one to watch for next year.
