Superblue has announced its first international art center Superblue Kyoto opening in early 2027

The venue will inaugurate with a major long-term solo exhibition by Light and Space artist James Turrell

Located directly opposite teamLab Biovortex Kyoto the indigo-clad space will announce full programming details in December

Experiential art company Superblue has officially announced the opening of Superblue Kyoto, launching its first international venue in Japan in early 2027 with a major solo exhibition by Light and Space pioneer James Turrell. Situated directly across from teamLab Biovortex Kyoto in the Kyoto Station Southeast Area, the new center expands the Miami-born art platform into Asia with an expansive, long-term survey exploring human perception.

surveys the American artist’s six-decade investigation into light as a physical medium from the 1960s through his contemporary practice. Visitors will encounter immersive installations that transform light from an illuminator into the physical subject itself, spanning early works like his 1966 Afrum-Proto projection—which casts the illusion of a glowing three-dimensional cube into a wall corner—to his renowned Skyspaces, Ganzfelds, and research connected to Roden Crater, his monumental naked-eye celestial observatory inside an extinct Arizona volcano.

Designed by teamLab Architects, the Superblue Kyoto venue mirrors its neighbor with a distinct indigo-blue exterior, establishing a unified creative nexus within the City of Kyoto’s urban revitalization zone. Together with teamLab’s largest domestic museum, the two cultural institutions create a walkable district dedicated to large-scale, multisensory contemporary art.

Superblue Kyoto is scheduled to open to the public in early 2027, with further details regarding featured artworks and opening dates slated for reveal in December. Take a look at the renderings above.
