Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists have officially greenlit an untitled original thriller starring two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The high-profile feature is currently slated to arrive in theaters in the fall of 2027.
Penned by screenwriters Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, the project—previously developed under the working title The Frame—focuses on a former police detective who receives an early release from prison following a terminal brain cancer diagnosis. Hoping to spend his remaining time reconnecting with his family, he quickly discovers that his unresolved past refuses to stay buried.
The collaboration with McQuarrie marks one of two major Washington-led productions scheduled for the near future. The actor was previously set to debut The Take—originally titled Here Comes the Flood and co-starring Robert Pattinson—before the end of 2026, though that production has since seen its release window pushed into 2027.
The untitled Christopher McQuarrie thriller starring Denzel Washington is scheduled for a theatrical rollout on October 1, 2027.
