Disney and franchise director Jon Turteltaub are officially moving forward with National Treasure 3. Turteltaub broke the news during a live taping of the National Treasure Hunt podcast, confirming that a third chapter in the action-adventure series is officially in active development.
Speaking at the live event, Turteltaub revealed that a screenplay is currently being written for the long-awaited sequel, adding that plans are underway to bring back as much of the original ensemble as possible. While representatives for Disney and lead actor Nicolas Cage have not officially issued statements regarding the announcement, Turteltaub emphasized that creative momentum on the project has officially resumed.
The original National Treasure debuted in 2004, grossing $347 million USD worldwide as it followed historians Ben Gates and Abigail Chase in a quest centered on the Declaration of Independence. Its 2007 sequel, National Treasure: The Book of Secrets, expanded the franchise further with $459 million USD in global box office receipts. While Disney+ previously expanded the universe with the 2022 spin-off series National Treasure: Edge of History, the main feature film series has remained dormant for nearly two decades.
