In a masterful dialogue between ancient tradition and futuristic biotechnology, The North Face Japan has unveiled its most culturally significant project to date. By partnering with SASHIKO GALS — an artisan collective hailing from the Ōtsuchi, Iwate Prefecture—the brand is transforming the rugged utility of outdoor gear into museum-quality “wearable art.” This collaboration isn’t just about preserving the past; it is about activating Japanese hand-stitching heritage for a sustainable, modern future.
The collection’s undisputed icon is the Nuptse Hanten Sashiko Jacket. In a historic first, the legendary 1992 Nuptse silhouette has been reinterpreted through the lens of a hanten, a traditional winter coat historically worn by the Japanese public. This hybrid design features a relaxed, zipless structure while retaining the Nuptse’s elite insulation. For the ultimate statement in innovation, the BP Nuptse Hanten utilizes Brewed Protein™—a lab-grown, petroleum-free fiber from the biotech pioneers at Spiber.
Each piece in the collection is meticulously hand-stitched, making every garment a one-of-one artifact characterized by the unique “scars” and patterns of the artisan’s needle. Rounding out the capsule are the BP Nuptse Down Sashiko Booties and heavyweight cotton tees, all featuring the signature reinforcement of sashiko thread. This limited-edition series will be available exclusively at The North Face ALTER in Harajuku, with the flagship BP Jacket retailing for ¥550,000 JPY.
The collection is available starting on Decembr 27 at The North Face Alter in Harajuku, Tokyo.
