  • Cillian Murphy is in talks to reprise his role for the final installment
  • Alex Garland is writing the script; Danny Boyle may direct

Sony Pictures has quickly confirmed the development of 28 Years Later, the third and final installment of the trilogy, following highly positive reactions to early screenings of the second film, The Bone Temple.

Crucially, Cillian Murphy, the star who originated the role of protagonist Jim in the breakout 2001 film 28 Days Later, is in talks to return for this third movie. Having already reprised the role for the upcoming The Bone Temple, Murphy’s commitment would ensure his character remains central to the entire narrative arc of the revival trilogy.

In addition, franchise screenwriter Alex Garland is currently penning the script. Danny Boyle, who directed the original and returned to direct the first 28 Days Later film, has also publicly expressed interest in directing the third installment, as the director is not yet confirmed.

The commercial success of the first 28 Years Later, which grossed $151 million worldwide, gave Sony the confidence to greenlight the final chapter. The second chapter of the series, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, is scheduled for release on January 16, 2026.
