Hulk Hogan has died at age 71, the WWE confirmed on Thursday. Florida’s Clearwater Police Department stated that medical calls for the global wrestling icon were related to a cardiac arrest.

The 12-time world champion wrestler played a pivotal role in building the WWE into a global enterprise, earning two inductions into the WWE Hall of Fame for his path-forging efforts in the arena. Hogan’s friend, Sylvester Stallone, first inducted him in 2005, and he was inducted a second time as a member of NWO, an American professional wrestling group, in 2020.

Hogan’s skills made him one of the most famous wrestlers of his time, eventually earning him Hollywood roles, such as the wrestler Thunderlips in 1982’s Rocky III. He also starred in movies including No Holds Barred (1989), Suburban Commando (1991), Mr. Nanny (1993), and Santa With Muscles (1996). Elsewhere on screen, Hogan starred in CBS’ 1985 cartoon, Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling, and later led a reality show alongside his family titled Hogan Knows Best

In a statement, the wrestling entertainment company said, “WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans.”
