Nilufar's Sensory Sanctuary Blurs The Lines Between Different Design Eras in Milan

At the 2025 edition of Milan Design Week, Nilufar has reimagined its local space in collaboration with Fosbury Architecture for an exhibition centered on the enduring appeal of metal’s aesthetic qualities. Leading with a retrofuturistic 1970s setting, the “Silver Lining” exhibition showcases authentic masterworks from the period alongside contemporary designers exploring the material in new ways.

“From the very beginning of my research, metals—especially aluminum—have held immense power. In their raw state, they symbolize strength and resilience, yet through the hands of skilled artisans, they become delicate and malleable, transforming into something infinitely expressive,” said Nilufar founder Nina Yashar in a statement from the gallery.

The installation is surrounded by a mirrored aluminum exterior, which contains plush interior finishes from wall to wall and floor. Fosbury Architects, also based in Milan, built the enveloping spatial experience to resemble a confined labyrinthine, immersing visitors in a space that delights the senses with stark contrasts. Vintage and contemporary design coexist, all while their reflective chrome surfaces interplay with Fosbury’s interiors.

Authentic pieces from the 1970s include upholstered metal seating by Walter Moretti, as well as other designs by Gio Ponti, Marzio Cecchi, Pietro Chiesa, Gino Colombini and Guzzetti, Gabriella Crespi, Giorgio Montani, Mario Bellini, and Nanda Vigo. Contemporary exhibitors include the likes of Audrey Large, Supaform, studioutte, Flavie Audi, Destroyers / Builders, Wendy Andreu & Bram Vanderbeke, Odd Matter, Irene Goldberg, and Michael Schoner. However, the sensibilities of the disparate eras begin to blur, creating a sense of historical ambiguity.
