Over the weekend, Artelli officially unveiled Nobuyoshi Araki’s Paradise pop-up exhibition in Hong Kong. Nestled in CEMENT, a modular creative and community-driven space within K11 MUSEA, the exhibition serves to celebrate the legendary Japanese photographer’s 84th birthday.

Over 200 pieces of photographic works are displayed, spanning large prints, a myriad of polaroids as well as projector film slides. Signed by the photographer himself, the exhibiting polaroids and projector set are available for purchase in collector’s deluxe editions. These editions come in a specially engraved wooden box, with its contents wrapped in cloth and tied with a thin red rope — a reference to shibari (Japanese rope bondage), another theme that is frequently explored in Araki’s works.

In addition to the Hong Kong pop-up, a more extensive body of work will be showcased at Artelli’s showroom in Macau starting April 30. The Macau exhibition will also include a special “darkroom,” offering visitors a glimpse into Araki’s artistic practices as well as photographic desires.

Together, the two exhibitions pay homage to the influential photographer’s four-decade-long creative career, providing a retrospective journey covering his signature themes and philosophies. A range of limited-edition merchandise from candles, plates, umbrellas to plushies are also on sale, all featuring signature elements from Araki’s photography.

Due to the mature nature of Araki’s artwork, admission is restricted to 18 years old and above. The Hong Kong pop-up exhibition is open to the public until May 28, 2024.
