COMME des GARÇONS alumni Hidenori Kumakiri and his brand beautiful people is known for developing simple but functional garments, and it has done just that with its just-announced collaboration with Mizuno.

In the collaboration, we see the two Japanese labels come together for a pair of sneakers and a technical backpack. For the sneakers, beautiful people takes various signature Mizuno components to create a highly-customizable sneaker based around the concept of “the ultimate in beauty resides in function.” As a result, we see an INFINITY WAVE midsole finished in white which uses its unique wavy holes to create two pressure plates that compress and absorb shocks when running, and an upper utilizing Mizuno’s CHRONO INX 9 construction.

With this, the mixed-textile upper adopts a skeleton-like aesthetic with various holes appearing all around, something which beautiful people has capitalized on by explaining how different colored or textured socks will change the sneaker’s appearance. The shoes are finished with a dual-branded lacing system, a velcro strap that runs over the tongue, a co-branded tongue tag and insoles, and a heel tab at the rear.

In addition to the sneaker collaboration is the beautiful people x Mizuno backpack. Equipped with a battery pack, this backpack has a fan inside it to keep itself cool in the hot weather in Japan, which funnels cool air into the internal balloon-like structure and out of the bag onto the wearer’s back and neck.

The beautiful people x Mizuno collaboration will be available from Dover Street Market Ginza on March 13 and on the beautiful people webstore on March 16. The sneakers retail for ¥34,000 JPY (approx. $318 USD), while the backpack with the fan retails for ¥44,600 JPY (approx. $418 USD), or around $260 USD without a fan.
