Shenzhen-based hardware manufacturer Anbernic officially announced the Anbernic RG DS Plus, a dual-screen handheld gaming console inspired by the classic Nintendo DS. Arriving with a footprint larger than the original non-Plus model, this updated release is tailored for emulation. The device natively integrates a dual-screen setup alongside an integrated capacitive stylus and a built-in microphone to cater to the retro gaming community. This approach bridges a physical gap in portable emulation by addressing the hardware requirements necessary for legacy Nintendo DS titles.
Front and center on the Anbernic RG DS Plus are its twin displays. Both screens measure 4.3 inches and deliver a 1024×768 resolution backed by 4x pixel-perfect scaling. The lower second display operates using a touch-based interface for the included stylus. Connecting these two panels is an upgraded dual alloy hinge. Built for a long lifespan, this hinge mechanism allows for stepless positioning to ensure optimal viewing angles. Physical inputs include four digital shoulder buttons and an analog stick. The handheld is also equipped with dual USB-C ports, dual microSD card slots, a headphone jack and front-facing speakers.
A Linux operating system powers the handheld, shifting away from the Android OS used on its predecessor. This software foundation relies on a newly developed dual-screen emulator called NNDSS. The NNDSS emulator natively supports microphone input, allowing players to use the built-in mic for gameplay mechanics. Specialized software delivers screen swapping, an instant save feature and a real-time clock. Players can also customize visual output by cycling through 76 built-in shader options.
Internal architecture makes trade-offs to balance community-driven software with affordability. The device is powered by the Rockchip RK3568 chipset, a processor unchanged from the previous version. The system features 1GB of RAM, representing a deliberate downgrade from the previous model’s 3GB. This adjustment is the result of a collaboration with @TheGammaSqueeze to port GammaOS to the platform. To maintain the price point of the earlier model, Anbernic removed the built-in eMMC memory.
Enthusiast-grade features arrive in a highly accessible tier. Anbernic offers the Anbernic RG DS Plus in three distinct color options: Metallic Blue, Matte Black and Coral Pink. While an official release date is not yet announced, the console will be priced below $100. Early adopters will have an introductory price of around $90 USD available during the first 72 hours of the launch.
