  • Current CEO and co-founder Jonah Peretti will step down from his leadership position to take on a newly created role as President of BuzzFeed AI

The digital media landscape is undergoing another seismic shift. Media entrepreneur and television mogul Byron Allen is officially acquiring a controlling interest in BuzzFeed. According to Variety, Allen Family Digital—an affiliate of Allen’s family office—has entered into an agreement to purchase a 52% majority stake in the struggling digital publisher for $120 million USD. As part of the sweeping takeover, Allen will assume the roles of Chairman and CEO, ending a nearly two-decade era for co-founder Jonah Peretti, who has led the company since its inception in 2006.

The $120 million USD transaction provides a critical financial lifeline for BuzzFeed. Prior to the announcement, the company had recently warned of severe liquidity issues, operating with limited cash against meaningful debt while facing the threat of a Nasdaq delisting. Structured as $20 million USD in cash alongside a $100 million five-year secured promissory note, the deal values the company significantly higher than its pre-announcement market capitalization of roughly $30 million. Upon the deal closing later this month, Peretti will transition into a newly created executive position: President of BuzzFeed AI.

Under Peretti’s new purview, BuzzFeed will continue its controversial pivot toward integrating artificial intelligence into its broader content strategy. Meanwhile, Allen is setting his sights on the streaming wars. The incoming CEO stated that his long-term vision involves transforming BuzzFeed and its subsidiary, HuffPost, into massive platforms for free-streaming video, audio, and user-generated content. Allen hopes to position the brands to directly compete with major online video and streaming giants.

The acquisition is yet another major expansion for Allen’s growing empire. As the head of Allen Media Group, he already oversees multiple television networks, local broadcast stations, and digital properties, including The Weather Channel.

Byron Allen’s takeover of BuzzFeed marks the end of the line for the company’s original indie-startup era, cementing a new corporate chapter focused on streaming and AI-driven content. As digital publishers continue to navigate a turbulent media economy, all eyes will be on Allen to see if his broadcast-heavy playbook can successfully resurrect one of the internet’s most recognizable brands.
