Summary

  • God of War creator David Jaffe has publicly criticized the first promotional image for the Prime Video series
  • On his YouTube channel, Jaffe stated the image of Kratos in the woods is “dumb” and “terrible”
  • Despite his critique of the marketing asset, Jaffe still believes the showrunner will deliver a good series

Prime Video’s God of War live-action series has received its first major critique, and it comes straight from the franchise’s original creator. David Jaffe, the mind behind the iconic video games, did not hold back his thoughts on the show’s newly released first-look image, voicing his disappointment to fans online.

Taking to his YouTube channel, Jaffe broke down the debut frame, which features series protagonist Kratos (played by Ryan Hurst) and his son Atreus (Callum Vinson) standing in the woods. The creator described the promotional still as “terrible” and “so bad in so many ways.” Specifically, Jaffe took issue with Kratos’s pose and expression, noting that it looks “stupid” and serves as a poor way to introduce the legendary character to a brand-new audience. He even went as far as to say the awkward framing makes the Spartan warrior look like he’s using the bathroom in the woods.

Despite the harsh visual critique, Jaffe clarified that his frustration is strictly with the marketing material, not the actual production. He praised showrunner Ron Moore as a “juggernaut of a talented fellow” and explicitly stated he has “absolutely no doubt it is going to be a good show.”
