Hakanto Contemporary, a non-profit art space in Antananarivo, Madagascar, is set to open a new 2,000 square meter venue on September 15, 2024. Founded in 2020 by artist Joël Andrianomearisoa and entrepreneur Hasnaine Yavarhoussen, the space aims to support and showcase contemporary Malagasy art in a country lacking established art infrastructure.

Andrianomearisoa, a renowned artist whose work has been exhibited globally, will serve as the artistic director and designer of the new space. It features modular spaces including exhibition areas, a bookstore, workshops and a library. Located in the developing Ankadimbahoaka area, it will offer themed seasonal programming, starting with “Family Stories” featuring works by Malagasy artists Jessy Razafimandimby, Aude Onivola Rajaona and Alexandre Gourçon. The program also includes collaborations with international artists and showcases works from the Hasnaine Yavarhoussen collection.

Having attracted about 50,000 visitors in four years with a growing young audience, Hakanto Contemporary plans to continue fostering local and international artistic dialogue. Future seasons will explore themes like “The New Love” and showcase a retrospective of photographer Pierrot Men. The space will host rotating exhibitions and events, focusing on both emerging and established artists. The exhibition is open until March 16, 2025.
