In the long-awaited Godzilla Minus One, Toho Studios returns to the iconic monster saga after a seven-year hiatus, honoring its 70th anniversary in a belated yet celebratory manner. Director Yamazaki takes a daring turn by shifting focus from the colossal reptile to the human perspective, notably protagonist Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) and his circle.

We had the chance to check out an advanced press screening of the film thanks to the Japan Society in New York City. This cinematic venture diverges into a period drama, highlighting personal stories and relationships over the typical emphasis on the monster’s grandeur. While surprising for purists, this departure weaves engaging new elements into the familiar beats from the original 1954 Godzilla.

Yamazaki’s classic filmmaking techniques ensure a cohesive plot, balancing kaiju-free segments with brisk pacing and dashes of wry humor. The film’s success lies in audience investment in the human cast, evoking emotional resonance, notably during the stirring and improbable third act. Moreover, Godzilla Minus One‘s monster design pays homage to its roots, blending scars and textures from the original film with elements of the recognizable Heisei Godzilla, solidifying its iconic status over 70 years.

Despite occasional dips in tension due to Godzilla’s intermittent appearances, the film compensates with the monster’s imposing presence whenever it reclaims the screen. It subtly weaves in the familiar atomic age horrors, intertwining criticism of past actions of Imperial Japan and Cold War America, portraying Godzilla as a symbol of consequential sins. At its core, the film champions unity and resilience in adversity, placing faith in the strength of ordinary individuals.

Starting December 1, the film will be available for viewing in theaters across the United States. Check out the trailer below in the meantime.
