One-of-200 1973 Porsche Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight Heads to RM Sotheby's Monaco Auction
And it could fetch over $1,000,000 USD.
Of all the classic Porsche 911s in the world, a 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight might stand as one of the most sought-after and formidable driver’s cars there has ever been. Limited to just 200 examples produced by the factory as an original “Lightweight” configuration, this particular example is now heading to RM Sotheby’s.
With matching-numbers chassis, engine, and transmission, this example is perhaps as original as it gets. Factory-spec “Light Yellow” paint is adorned with the quintessential black Carrera graphics and running stripes, while further classic Porsche branding graces the rear deck underneath the ducktail spoiler, itself also wearing Carrera RS badging.
As this is the RS — read, Rennsport, or motorsport — the car was the perfect race car for the road in the 1970s. Fittingly, it is equipped with a 2.4-liter flat-six engine taken from the 2.7-liter 911 S, as well as Bosch fuel injection, Niksail low-friction-lined cylinders, a stiffer suspension, larger brakes and wheels, revised chassis dynamics, and more, to make the 210 HP and 188 lb-ft of torque-pushing machine a powerful classic 911.
Complementing the power was a wide body kit with fender flares, a redesigned front bumper and that aforementioned ducktail spoiler, which marked the first factory spoiler to be fitted to a 911. As this is a “Lightweight,” Porsche used thinner steel for the body panels, thinner glass for the windows, lighter fiberglass bumpers, and racing seats, while sound insulation, rear seats, sun visors, radio, dashboard clock, and other interior fittings were eschewed.
