Lodgers: Serendipity in the Fly Ranch Wilderness by Zhicheng Xu and Mengqi Moon He brings together composting toilets, reclaimed timber waste, traditional thatching methods using local materials, computational script-generated parametric design, and native species shelters to provide an environmental education venue, soil replenishment, sustainable waste management, and habitat enrichment for Fly Ranch. Coyote Mountain by Dusty Michael, Jane Maru, and Anna Meloyan brings together low-temperature geothermal, luminescent solar concentrator photovoltaic, bladeless wind turbines, lithium-ion energy storage, and rammed earth construction to contribute 5,256 MWh/year of heat, 460 MWh/year of electricity, and a large multipurpose space for creative activities. The Source by Mateusz Góra and Agata Gryszkiewicz (Tamaga Studio) uses solar photovoltaic, battery energy storage, water cistern, rammed earth thermal mass, fruit trees, fruit walls, and compost to contribute 250 kg/year of food, 2.2 MWh/year of electricity, 9,000 liters/year of water, habitat enhancement, environmental education venue, and soil replenishment. The top design proposals for Burning Man‘s permanent art and event space were released on Wednesday.

Multidisciplinary creatives from around the world were invited to design mockups as part of the LAGI 2020 Fly Ranch design challenge. The competition was a collaboration between the Burning Man Project and the Land Art Generator Initiative to create the foundational infrastructure at a Nevada nature site that hosts Burning Man Project events.

Designers were tasked with integrating sustainable systems for food, energy, water and shelter into their artistic designs. Nearly 200 teams submitted proposals, and 10 were chosen by a panel of local indigenous community communities and experts in the fields of art, science, architecture, landscape design, conservation and engineering.

The top ranking teams have been invited to test their on-site installation and functional prototypes.

The Burning Man event is held annually in Black Rock City, Nevada, and draws tens of thousands of people each year. In 2016, the organization behind Black Rock City purchased the 3,800 acre Fly Ranch property just north of the event site as an opportunity “to create a year-round rural incubator for Burning Man culture and a catalyst for innovation and creativity in the world.”

Last year, the Burning Man festival was cancelled to due to the coronavirus pandemic.
