With the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the numerous records that Avengers: Endgame has already broken by tying in countless superhero movies in a shared universe, there’s no denying that if Marvel is good at one thing, it’s continuity, and it didn’t drop the ball with its press conference for the upcoming most anticipated movie of the year either.

There were many empty seats on stage at the press conference last Sunday in L.A., and for good reason: the seats are for those who fell victim to Thanos’ snap of a finger at the end of Infinity War, commemorating their heroic deeds. With just a handful of superheroes left on stage, the empty chairs really emphasized the dire situation the Avengers find themselves in right now, missing key figures like Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.

Jon Favreau, who directed the original Iron Man which kickstarted the MCU in 2008, added to the heaviness with his introduction for the press conference, reminding us that half the team has been killed off, with a momentous and impactful stage reveal at the drop of a curtain. During the conference itself, Chris Evans (Captain America), taking up Tom Holland’s (Spiderman) usual tendency to reveal spoilers, almost let the fate of his character slip, but was quickly rescued by the Joe Russo, one of the directors of the blockbuster. Both these moments have been captured on video, which you can see below.

Avengers: Endgame comes out 26 April, and tickets are now open for sale.
