Alpha Pup's Astronautica Debuts 'Gemini Remixes' Project
Featuring remixes by Toy Light, Gypsymamba & more.
Earlier this year, we debuted the incredible visual for Astronautica’s standout record “Palm Springs.” Today, we’re reconnecting with the multi-talented, forward-thinking Californian for another striking new release. Continuing to create under the banner of west coast creative institution Alpha Pup Records, Astronautica serves up a brand new, four-track project featuring official reworks of her original records. Dubbed Gemini Remixes, the project finds Astronautica looking to Gypsymamba, Toy Light and Elusive for remixes of her Gemini cuts, as well as taking it upon herself to rejuvenate one of her past songs. You can stream all the EP in its entirety and read up on the story behind the project below. It’s also available for listening and pick-up at Bandcamp.
What motivated you to create a remix project for Gemini?
I’ve wanted to create a remix project for a minute now. Obviously fans enjoy hearing remixes, but as an artists, its satisfying on another level to hear people whose music you admire putting their own spin on your own music. I finally decided to just do it. I hit up some friends that I had gone on tour with, who are also fellow Alpha Pup artists to see if they’d be down, and they were as excited as I was about it.
How did you link up with the producers involved?
It’s actually kind of funny because I was going on tour with three other people, and only really knew one of guys. I knew who the other two were through the internet because of music and our label, but had never actually met them irl. At first, I was a little hesitant, being the only female, but as soon as I met them at our first show, I knew it was gonna be a fun tour. I definitely lucked out being able to go on tour with them, everyone got along so easily and naturally. I’m a big fan of their music, and I thought it would be perfect for them to remix my tracks because we’re all kind of stylistically different, and I knew it would come out sounding super cool.
In the future, whose music could you see yourself remixing and which artists would you like to work with?
I think it would be cool to remix some of Jamie xx’s music, as well as work with him. Some other artists I’d like to collaborate with right now would be Mura Masa, MNEK, Mr Little Jeans, Nosaj Thing, Teebs, and Jacques Greene.
Since this is project is basically a joint effort from Alpha Pup, how would you say Alpha Pup promotes and supports originality and experimentation from their sister’s artists?
Alpha Pup is great because they allow artists to have full creative control of their projects. Kev will work with any artist whose music he loves, no matter how big or small. It’s all about the music for him. Because of that, I think the artists on the roster are really able to stand out because we are free to explore our own unique vibe. All of my releases have been very different from the previous ones, and I’ve really been able to experiment with my sound and not be constricted to creating one thing.
Following the release of your last original project, what’s next for you on the music front?
I’ve been keeping busy with working on a bunch of little side projects. I just started a podcast called Sangria Sundays that I do weekly, I have plans to do a collaboration EP with a friend hopefully in the Fall, working on a bunch of new music to start putting together a new album, and a couple girlfriends (Dot and DJ Suzie Strong) and I have been doing a monthly at the Ace hotel in downtown LA, which has been super cool!
