The Roland TR-808 is one of, if not the most important piece of gear in modern music. Many popular genres, such as hip-hop, synth pop and house, are backboned by the instrument. Atlantic Films and You Know Films teamed up to release a documentary on the 808 in theaters and online this spring. It will explore the history of the mahcine and discuss its impact towards the music sphere since its creation in the 80s. The film showed at SXSW earlier this year and will first be an exclusive release through iTunes and Apple Music. Atlantic Records Chairman and CEO Craig Kallman shares with Deadline:

“It’s only appropriate that a film about a machine that revolutionized how music is made be seen via a service that revolutionized how music is consumed. The story of how the 808 changed the face of modern music is simply extraordinary, and the Apple Music audience is perfect for this compelling film.”
