Pro Skater Erik Ellington on the Struggles of Alcoholism
Erik shares his battle with alcoholism in a compelling new short film.
It was only a couple years ago when an alcohol-fueled fight in Colorado thrust pro skater Erik Ellington in the face of a 10-32 year term prison charge. “What I was doing was not leading by example… I was destroying by example.” In the mid-’90s too, skateboarding had just burst onto the scene, rising among a generation of youth hungry for a life of skating, partying, drugs and alcohol (à la Harmony Korine’s KIDS).
At 38 years old today, Erik tells his tale of alcohol addiction in a short film presented by KREW titled “Destroying by Example.” Pairing stunning visuals with an equally compelling narrative, the video shows Erik’s new life of sobriety, abstinence and responsibility, with a story about one of the most interesting personalities in skateboarding today that comes full circle as he currently mentors a local youth struggling with alcoholism.
