This Memory Disc Has Enough Storage Space to Record the History of Humankind

University of Southampton scientists offer a look at the breakthrough technology.

Back in 2013, University of Southampton scientists introduced so-called “Superman memory” 5D crystals capable of storing a whopping 360TB of data. Now, three years later, those same scientists have fully demonstrated the potentially life-changing technology. Using femtosecond laser pulses to write data and nanostructured quartz discs to store it, the team has created a way to store massive amounts of information. The data essentially changes the composition of the disc itself and can then be read using pulses of light and then recording the polarization. Best of all, the discs are insanely stable: they can withstand temperatures of up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and last as long as 13.8 billion years.
