Watch This Short Film About Crafting Beautiful Designs From Driftwood
Imbued with the signs of the passage of time, woodworker Steven Lane translates these qualities of driftwood into beautiful products.
To most people, driftwood is nothing more than a part of the landscape, oftentimes blending indistinctly into the background. However, for woodworker Steven Lane, driftwood is an evocative medium with which he carves everything from eyewear to headphones. To Lane, the beauty of driftwood lies in the fact that it shows the wear and tear of nature, and the passage of time that has been etched into the very structure of the wood, and as such the products he creates are one-of-a-kind, imbued with the very same story of the wood it was made from. Filmmaker Will Lascelles sought out the New Zealand craftsman for an insight into his philosophy in the short film “Ingrained,” where we follow Lane through his entire process from salvaging driftwood, to carving and assembling the finished designs. Enjoy the film above.
