The Olympic Torch for the Rio 2016 Games by Chelles & Hayashi
The Sao Paolo studio encapsulated the spirit of Brazilian culture with the expanding torch.

The Olympic torch is perhaps our highest recognition of international competition, and with each iteration, the symbol grows in importance and legacy. For the Rio 2016 games, the Olympic committee has just revealed the winning design from its open invitation, to which 76 Brazilian agencies submitted. The design, which was created by Sao Paolo-based firm Chelles & Hayashi, is meant to highlight the warm spirit of the Brazilian people. This is chiefly achieved through the expanding, segmented body that reveals the integral colors of Brazil when passed between torchbearers. The sky, mountains, sea and earth are all symbolized within the torch, which is physically crafted from recycled aluminum and resin with a satin finish. Check out a look at the torch and a comprehensive inspiration video below, while the actual torch will be viewable at the Summer Olympics next August.
