The apocalypse has been fertile ground for some of Hollywood’s grandest spectacles. However, the notion of a world without life has also inspired some of the big-screen’s most thoughtful meditations on the meaning of existence. That’s the approach Craig Zobel takes with his new film, Z for Zachariah. Rather than sensationalize the end of the world, Zobel instead tells the story of a young woman named Ann (Margot Robbie) who appears to be the sole survivor of a mysterious plague that’s wiped out the whole of humanity. Living alone in an isolated patch of remaining wilderness for over a year, she finally encounters Loomis (Chiwetel Ejiofor), another survivor with whom she forms a common bond. Their life of solitude is shattered however, with the arrival of a mysterious disheveled stranger (Chris Pine), whose dark presence threatens to destroy what’s left of Ann and Loomis’ humanity. Based on the well-known novel of the same name, the latest film adaptation of Z for Zachariah looks to be a quietly intense psychological thriller. Be sure to check it out when it releases in theaters August 21.
