Tesla Ready to Update Cars With 'Autopilot' Functionality
Made to mimic the system used by pilots.

Tesla motor company and founder Elon Musk are preparing to release an over-the-air update for its S and X model vehicles that will include autonomous functionality. Similar to the ‘autopilot’ found in airplanes used by pilots, the system is “to increase comfort and safety when conditions are clear,” said Musk. “Tesla’s Autopilot is a way to relieve drivers of the most boring and potentially dangerous aspects of road travel – but the driver is still responsible for, and ultimately in control of, the car.” The system is reportedly reliant on the sensors found on the bottom of the car, along with the front-facing camera near the rear-view mirror and the radar system built into the front of the vehicle. The autopilot will thus adjust speed by reading road signs in conjunction with its cruise control, stay within a specific lane by managing the steering wheel, and allow for changing lanes with a simple tap of the turn signal. Musk also mentioned an auto parking system that will release as well to assist in parking the car in garages. The update is expected to roll out this week to all Tesla S and X model owners.
