While smartwatches are a huge leap forward for the watch form in terms of functionality, they are still fundamentally limited by their adherence to the traditional two-piece format of display and band. Flexible technology firm Polyera hopes to break that boundary with its proprietary Wove Band, which forgoes the glass screen of smartwatches for a flexible, always-on e-ink display that wraps around your entire wrist and maximizes screen real estate. On your wrist, it displays information in a vertical layout, but adjusts to landscape mode when placed flat. And instead of apps, the Wove Band runs “compositions,” which utilize all of the extra screen available for improved functionality. Check out WIRED‘s take on the new technology, due for a 2016 release, in the video above.
