Xander Zhou 2015 Fall/Winter Collection

When Xander Zhou sent out his 2015 fall/winter invitations, emblazoned with the words “Wild West” with an image of cowboys around a campfire, the theme and tone of the show was already set. Through interpreting the theme, the Chinese-born, Dutch-educated fashion designer compared his own experience in learning about cowboy culture to the moment when most Westerners first encounter Oriental elements, in a purely superficial manner. The result is a collection replete with fringes, destroyed denim, leather and fur. Although Zhou’s fine focus on detail is not easily discernible, one can glean elements that herald to his Chinese background, such as overcoats with basket weaving left unwoven for a fringe effect, or small badges with calligraphy done by famed calligrapher Wang Dan. Carrying a distinctly ’70s feel with chevron, space boots and diamond patchwork, this “Wild West” collection has a bit of retro mixed in as well.
