Established in 2000 by Lance and Nicola Herbst, their namesake practice, Herbst Architects, has been at the forefront of commercial, residential and educational building design for the last 14 years.Through innovative thinking and a good eye for aesthetics, their work has been widely published on both a national and international level — credited with many accolades including that of the 14NZIA and 2012 Home of the Year Award.
Doing well to align itself with the credibility of its predecessors, Castle Rock House is one of the latest additions to Herbst’s ever-growing portfolio of stunning work. Constructed as a beach house that overlooks the Whangarei Heads of New Zealand, Castle Rock House is a composition of fragmented living spaces that interconnect at various heights along the hill’s incline. With a picturesque view of the sea, the design’s uppermost section contains an open plan kitchen, connecting terrace and a secluded lounge area. The sleeping quarters can be found on the lower level and consist of two large bedrooms and a single dormitory style space — capable of comfortably sleeping 6 to 8 people.
