The advances of technology are often best visualized when comparing the many physical devices that have become obsolete, their functions uploaded into the cloud or compressed into a smartphone app. The producers behind Best Reviews of Harvard Innovation Lab has endeavored to show exactly this in the above video, where as the years pass, different physical items are replaced by computer programs and apps — the calculator by Microsoft Excel, the dictionary by Dictionary.com, the fax machine by PDF files, etc. Beginning in 1980 and ending in 2014, a desk cluttered with devices and paper products is completely replaced by an Apple MacBook and a smartphone, leaving a desk that could be portrayed both as clutter-free and desolate.
