Looking to nature, abstract art and his own label’s foundation of a modernist aesthetic, designer Neil Barrett recently presented his Fall/Winter 2014 collection. Resolutely dark thanks to a palette comprised of hues of ebony, walnut and blue, the range eschews color, instead focusing on juxtapositions of both texture and fabrication as sleek, streamlined pieces are paired with oversized shapes, lightweight sportswear, fine wools and more. Both conceptually and literally, the sweatshirt serves as the lynchpin of the collection; coats are rendered both lightweight and easy-to-wear while sweats themselves include fresh details like zips and press-stud fastenings, effectively rendering them as outerwear themselves with a contemporary aesthetic that hybridizes the casual and the formal.
