Photographer Gus Petro is used to the plains and mountains of his native Switzerland, so when the lensman visited the United States last year, he was struck by what he describes as the juxtaposition of “emptiness” and “density.” Petro was referring to his trip to the Grand Canyon just a week after his stay in the Big Apple, a contrast so strong that it spurred a photo project he called Merge. Matching photographs, perspective points and lens angles — and adding a dose of what he calls “Photoshop magic” — Petro’s mix-and-match landscape fuses together imagery from two of the nation’s most popular destinations, resulting in visuals that have been surprising and confounding viewers with their unique vision of America.
