Music Essentials: Peanut Butter Wolf

Chris Manak, better known as Peanut Butter Wolf is a household name to anyone with the slightest knowledge on quality hip-hop. Playing an active roll since the ’90s, Wolf’s own production and DJ sets reflect the artist’s eclectic crate digging abilities in and outside the immediate circles of hip-hop, joining dots from a long list of sub-genres and esoteric sounds under his own inventiveness – check out his recent 12-hour mix for Boiler Room on 12/12/12. Wolf’s embracing style is further mirrored onto Stones Throw Records and those chosen to fall under his iconic imprint. Harbouring some of alternative hip-hop’s most iconic, Stones Throw’s replete archive is a great crate digging journey in itself. With the likes of J.Dilla, Madlib and Quasimoto donned as left field hip-hop’s most iconic and artists like Jonwayne, Dam-Funk and The Stepkids spearheading the new wave, its fair to say Wolf and Stones Throw’s timeless aesthetics holds a legacy in the far-reaching sounds of all things inspiring. Understanding this, it came as no surprise that Wolf’s Music Essentials featured a number of quaint and classic items that reflect his overall aesthetics. While his trademark fedora hat makes an appearance, other necessities see a Home Depot crate full of records, DJ/VJ accessories, alongside retro VHS tapes and a video game magazine that hallmark the golden era synonymous to hip-hop. Peanut Butter Wolf and Stones Throw is set to embark on the Stones Throw 2013 Soul Tour throughout August. Check here for more on dates and information.
