With roots firmly grounded in bike craftwork, luxury Dutch bicycle workshop Vanhulsteijn presents a new project in collaboration with Sotheby’s. After being introduced to the technique by a pair of Russian masters, founder Herman van Hulsteijn finally undertook the meticulous Japanese urushi painting technique. Urushi involves layering foils of precious metals underneath translucent lacquer, ultimately creating a rich, glowing finish. To complete the aesthetics of the bike, Vanhulsteijn’s team created custom handlebars, pedals and brake levers, ultimately creating an artistic, spiraling masterpiece. Enjoy a video of the bike’s process above, while interested parties can inquire about the bike directly with Vanhulsteijn.
