The Grammy nominations are out, and it come as no big surprise that a particularly polarizing Kanye West found himself nominated only twice, and wholly omitted in the “Album of the Year” category for the critically lauded Yeezus. Never one to hold his tongue, Yeezy let some thoughts loose at a show in Phoenix two days ago. Far from the angry “rant” that his musings are usually labeled, Kanye put forward some pretty compelling ideas as to why he wasn’t nominated, even breaking into auto-tune at various times during the conversation with the crowd. The Grammys have never been known for their warm reception of rap music, but it’s hard to say Kanye doesn’t have a point when he insinuates other things:
“When I say Yeezus, I mean Yeez-Is-Us. And anytime I’m fighting, I’m fighting for us…I’m 36-years-old and I have 21 Grammys. That’s the most Grammys of any 36-year-old. Out of all of those 21 Grammys, I’ve never won a Grammy against a white artist. And Yeezus is the top one or two album on every single list. But only gets two nominations from the Grammys. What are they trying to say? Do they think that I wouldn’t notice?…when I say people are afraid of the truth, that’s one example right there in front of you. And people come to me and congratulate me on those two nominations. F*CK THOSE NOMINATIONS!”
