Spanish firm SCT Estudio de Arquitectura was recently commissioned to design a house in Costa d’en Blanes, Mallorca. Set on a slope, on a long and narrow parcel of land, the new residence is a study in functionality, light and dark, and positive and negative spacing. The architects’ first consideration was livability and the positioning of day and night timezones. As such, the day zone is situated on the upper floor, where better views, increased privacy, and access to the pool and solarium make for a better usage of the elevated space. The house’s exterior, for the most part, involves geometric lines and is constructed of concrete slabs, though the use of glass on the lateral enclosures ensures balance and sufficient natural lighting. Inside, living spaces are imbued with a high level of spacial quality – the result of visual considerations and clean, contemporary interior design that reflects the structure’s overall composition.
